Location classification and evidence standards

PaintingLocations separates the place a painting depicts from where it was painted and where the original is held today.

Plain-English map categories

A — viewpoint

A recorded point for the artist’s standpoint. Only records with evidence beyond Wikidata are called independently verified viewpoints.

B — identified subject

A particular building, street, bridge, monument or other recognisable subject is shown. This does not establish where the artist stood.

C — landscape or cityscape

A real landscape, settlement or cityscape is identified, but the precise artist viewpoint is unknown.

Precision labels

Exact means a bounded viewpoint point; approximate identifies a subject or nearby location; area deliberately represents a broader landscape or city area. An area marker never implies an exact viewpoint.

Independent verification

A record is independently verified only when a museum catalogue, scholarly publication or comparable source supports the standpoint beyond a Wikidata P1259 assertion. A P1259 record can remain useful as a structured lead, but is labelled as awaiting verification.

Sources and limits

Identity, relations and many coordinates are source-derived from Wikidata. PaintingLocations performs the public classification, semantic review and evidence distinction. Wikimedia Commons images and OpenStreetMap geometry are not redistributed in the Precision Study dataset. Read the study limitations.
